Reply:start small and easy. for lettuce an leafy plant you need at least 20- 30 inches of space per plant. ( tomatoes, eggplants, etc.) for you, the best would be a combination of easy growers and herbs to use. small individual pots for rosemary, basil, thyme, oregano. a good sized 6-9 inches deep pot with a 10 inch round top is good for cherry tomatoes, and also using the similar pot you can plant 6-7 bulbs of tulips or daffodils. if your have the space. make sure you first define a spot for vegetables and for decorative. then go to your local nursery and they will give expert advice for which plant you should get. tell them what your lifestyle is and how much time you want to spend outside. best time to plant is spring, soil needs to be augmented if poorly draining, potting soil is for pots only. fertilizer use is simple. first number is for leaf growth, middle number is for flower and fruit, last number is for roots. use general purpose of any brand it's the same but get a high middle number to make the palnt bear more fruit or flower. granulated is ok and more economical, liquid is best but very very expensive. it's more important to make sure that the soil is prepped and ready to plant. spray some liquid detergent, astingent mouthwash mixed with water, coke and beer. on the soil to kill pest, molds and bacteria and feed the soil.
Reply:Read the book "Square Foot Gardening" and make it easy on yourself.
Reply:I live in Eastern Wa. My parents have a great vegetable garden. First my dad tilled the soil. He had to spend a lot of time getting all of the rocks out. Then he tilled in some fertilizer into the soil. Spacing depends on the type of seed or seedling you are planting. Just read the tab or package to give adequate space. Water every evening so the sun doesn't take away the needed moisture.
