What is the difference between a turnpike and a parkway?

For example: what is the difference between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway?, besides where they lead to.

What is the difference between a turnpike and a parkway?
Parkways as a rule have more on and off ramps and for getting around in a smaller area, turnpikes are the closet thing to an autobahn we have in the US. They have few on and offramps, tolls always, and go longer distances.

Or it could just be that they liked that name more.
Reply:I don't know about the Garden State Parkway but turnpikes usually charge a toll to use them
Reply:A Turnpike is a toll road. A Parkway is a wide road with grass and trees often with a grassy median.

--- from Encarta dictionary

I'm still trying to figure out why we drive on a PARKway and park in a DRIVEway. Does this make sense?
Reply:A Turnpike is, specifically, a toll road. "Parkway" can be used to describe any kind of large highway.
Reply:Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?
Reply:Spelling?
