what do you call those little descriptive slogans: 'the show me state', 'the garden state' etc - is there a proper name for them?

Any "The ____________ State" is a nickname. States also have mottos, like New Hampshire's "Live Free or Die". Mottos and nicknames are two different things.
Reply:I just call them the state nickname. That's what it's called on the Florida government site - but then this is Florida...lol
Reply:They're called State Mottos.
Reply:They are simply nicknames.
